Ownership or involvement with horses brings with it substantial responsibilities. The Animals Welfare Act 2006 promotes a positive duty to care for animals. This extends to a duty for animals which are owned or for which some other person is responsible. It is therefore particular interest to those who own their own horse and or are looking after someone else’s horse. It does of course extend to other animals. This can be particularly important for those commercial organisations providing livery. There are also implications for horses which are loaned out or in shared ownership.
The Act requires the persons to take in to account the needs of an animal and good practice for that animal. Animal’s needs includes its environment, diet, normal behaviour and other characteristics.
